Dan Jones here: At 64, I'm a dad, Grand pa, friend, son, brother, uncle and artist creating and living in the sierra foothills.
I've been an Artist in the professional sense, since 1976. Starting as a painter/firefighter, creating fanciful worlds and the characters who live in them. I found out very early that when you are creating these worlds you need your own special research, to achieve the needed authenticity for the expression. One of the ways to get original research was to create my own. This led me to the world of Sculpture: wood working, clay, cement, steel and what ever else it would take for me to get the needed results. As this research came out I started to get commissions. People began commissioning wood carvings, Doors, beds, wall pieces. One of my first large pieces was an instillation sculpture, expressing the forest I was painting- in full scale. It was to be a facade, 33' long 9' tall for a gift shop in Hawaii. Constructing it out of foam, wood and covered with polymer cement. Foam because of weight concerns, (Shipping). Painted polymer cement for strength and durability. From that point on, 1979, I've sculpted, painted and in general used art as my primary source of sustenance.
My current effort is back to painting, I sorta got side tracked by sculpture. The "People of the Edge" series is my latest expression. Using the Giclee' process for limited addition reproductions. The originals are acrylics on Masonite. Building up transparent colors in layers, while glazing with gloss medium in between. The result is very deep rich color. The finished surface is a burnished gloss feel. The prints are like a gloss photo; however I am experimenting with other papers/surfaces. The digital realm offers such a variety of expressions
Art Statement Dan Jones
Art, a life long platform for expressing my stay on this planet, has been: loyal, pesky, seductive, joyful, and distractive; my nirvana, nemesis, reason, excuse, rational, love, and compass.
I see/feel life’s wonder-filled mystery unveil itself daily. At times its complexity is daunting, oppressive, and overwhelming. Then there are times when it is so clear, vivid, and beautiful I am inspired beyond words. It connects me to the ever present “now,” a timeless state. A place where the witness reveals itself as the mirror it is, evoking an over-all sense of joyous elation while facing infinity.
Seeing nature as a portal to reveal creative states of being and spacial rhythms are the what OF my art IS. The pull is
magnetic, genetic, and poetic. In recent works the flow is “let,” merging human intellect, imagination, and passion with the ever present organic matrix, exposing new and inspirational ways of seeing, feeling, and being.
