A view down the Derwent Valley towards the two visible towers of Riber Castle, taken in 2006 on a frosty dawn. Riber was the late 19th century folly and home of John Smedley, of 'Smedley's Hydrotherapy Institution' in Matlock (now the HQ of Derbyshire Councy Council). Smedley only lived in the castle briefly before he died, and since then it has variously been a private school, a luxury hotel and even a small zoo. At the time of this photograph it was awaiting its next phase under the ownership of a property developer.
