Marlon Brando (American Icons #4
David Lewis Baker
One of a series of mixed media portraits of Iconic Americans, this one depicts the late great Marlon Brando. In this instance, I have tried to create a sense of Brando's difficulties with both popular American culture and his own place at the heart of it. For instance he rejected a best actor Oscar in protest at the treatment of native Americans in the 1970s. And his role as Kurtz in 'Apocalypse Now' was a journey to the heart of the darkness within the American dream. That is why I have selected this role to depict him. Brando (Kurtz) stares intently in judgement at the ball of stars, representing the stars and stripes, with tribal marks on his face.
