Biography
George CousinsHello everyone…I was born and raised in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, on the East Coast of Canada. A small fishing town where my Grandfather was a Grand Banks fisherman and my Dad was in the merchant marine. I grew up with a love of the sea, ships, and everything in nature. My greatest love was to wonder what was over that range of hills or over the horizon.
Eventually I left to pursue a life in electronics. First in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where I spent almost three years travelling around the Arctic, seeing places that very few people had ever seen. Then years with General Electric on defense work, Canadian Marconi where I was back on ships again, then into management with Westinghouse and finally caught the bug to get into computers in 1969. Started and managed several computer companies and finally started a cable and networking company with my two sons. Now at 76 I’ve finally decided to retire (sort of) and see what I could do with my photography.
I started with a Box Brownie when I was about 10, graduated to a simple reflex (name unknown) and took all the simple little snaps that boys do at that age. Quite forgettable except for personal memories.
In 1953 the Air Force sent me to the Arctic, and a good friend insisted on lending me a 35mm. Voightlander, gave me a crash course in how to use it, pushed me into buying a light meter and tripod and as much color film as I could afford, and I was on my way. I kept a careful detailed log of every picture I took, sent the film back to my friend for processing along with the log, and he then wrote me back and gave me his analysis of what I had done right or wrong with each frame. One-on-one mentoring over thousands of miles, but I did learn a few things. Eventually I managed to buy an Exakta Varex 35mm. Along with some filters and a lovely 400 mm. telephoto, and that was my pride and joy until I finally went digital around 1996 or so. Several itterations later, I’m now using a Sony DSCF828 and I suppose will move into a DSLR one of these days.
As you can see, photography has always been a beloved hobby. I’m by no means a pro, and never will be. But with a fairly happy marriage between camera and computer, and investing in some rather expensive peripherals, I thought I’d try to see if I could actually market some of my stuff. I’ll be delighted if I do, but also be happy if some folks like to just look. Feel free to enjoy, laugh, groan or whatever pleases you. And if you feel moved enough to make a purchase, be assured I’ll do my best to make you happy. Oh yes, I now live near Victoria, British Columbia, but every year I go back to Nova Scotia, which will always be “home”. I’ll get a web site up when I get the time, but for now, look for me here on Yessy.
