Vinhold’s ‘Scottish’ Banquet
Maureen W. Clifton

Each Year in the Barony of Vinhold in the West Kingdom (SCA, medieval group), the Barony held an All Hallow’s Harvest Feast. The theme was different every year. In 1987, Scott of Kent was the Autocrat & Countess Dierdriana of the Misty Isles was Co-Autocrat. We decided to have an authentic late-1500s Medieval Scottish Feast – ‘A Taste of Scotland!’ We asked a Chef we knew, Donald MacRae to be our Chef for the event. Barony members Volunteered to be Kitchen Staff & some helped Dierdriana decorate the Feast Hall. We invited an excellent & talented Bagpiper, Jack Cunningham, as the main Entertainment. Our Piper O' Dundee Piped the ‘Baron of Beef’ into the Feast Hall with 2 strappin’ lads carryin’ it on a large board for all to see & “Oh’s” & “Ah’s” were heard! I dinae t’ink t’ey were expectin’ it ta be so big! It had roasted all day long, filling the hall with the wonderful scent of braised roast & everyone was certainly ready for Harvest Feast! We decorated the hall in Scottish flair & medieval banners. The Announcements (view #2), Feast Schedule & Menu (main view) & Tickets (view #3) were created by Dierdriana, using her Calligraphy with her art (had to have grapes, after all, it was in the Napa Valley – see view #4) & ‘clip art’ to finish it (Scotch Thistles & a Piper). The Calligraphy & set-up for these were all done by hand without a computer – as we did not own a computer in those days (did not have one at work, either). That seems archaic, doesn’t it? Dierdriana made Scottish Tartan Ribbon Favors (view # 3 with Ticket) with a safety pin sewn to the back of each for paid guest & dignitaries (100) to wear & as a memory token of the feast. The event went well overall & a great time was had by all! The ‘Baron of Beef’ was called ‘Stolen Coo’ on the Menu. The Map seen on the Announcement was drawn by Dierdriana. For his services, our Chef, Donald, was gifted a wonderful handmade & beautiful knife, Scott & Dierdriana commissioned (not baronial funds). It was engraved with the event name & date. For the Piper, Jack, we commissioned a Falconer’s Glove, as he worked as a Volunteer at the San Francisco Zoo with Birds of Prey (hawks & falcons). The glove was made well of fine leather by a good leather craftsman. I made the Jack a Saffron Highland Shirt to his specifications & unfortunately do not find a photo of him wearing it for the event, though he did. See the view herein this gallery that follows of Dierdriana & her friend, Susan, dressed as Scottish Lasses at Vinhold’s Scottish Harvest Feast, long ago & far away. The memories are still in the shadows of my mind. Knowing all the hard work it takes to produce such a feast, it makes me wonder how I did all I did in those days. At least I did not have to make my costume! Vinhold’s Baron Anthony the Sinister was most pleased with the ‘Taste of Scotland’ Harvest Feast, I might add! The contact phone numbers & actual address & location of the hall have been removed from the Announcement. Ah, ‘A Taste of Scotland, Indeed!’
