The story of how my drawing of ‘The Passion Flower’ occurred is this. In 1971, I lived in a townhouse in North Highlands, California, not far from McClellan AFB. One fine Spring day, as I walked my baby boy, Michael in his stroller down the street, I came across a plant growing on an old wood post & wire fence.

I had never seen a plant like it before that day! It was colorful, delicate & complex. Its flowers were quite interesting in structure. There were small red fruit, as well. It was a vine & had interlaced itself all over the fence. Oh, for the want of a camera in those moments.

I stopped & looked at a flower really close, as it was the most unique flower I had ever seen. I etched its design in my mind’s eye. And, we continued on our walk, stopping by the flowers on the way back home. Later, I sketched the flower & its fruit in pencil, noting its colors to the side of my drawing.

I wanted to learn what kind of flower it was! The next time I went to the library, I took my sketch with me & looked up flowers. I learned what this unique flower actually was, its history & from whence it had arrived in North America! I learned it was a ‘Passion Flower’ & thus, had ‘Passion Fruit.’

What I remember is this: ‘Passion Flowers’ come from South America & are not indigenous to North America, though they grow here quite well in some areas. There was more, though not necessary for this post. It had many meanings.

Fast forward to 1978. Using my sketches, I used pen & ink & colored pens to create ‘The Passion Flower’ & its ‘Passion Fruit’ to look just like the first one I had ever seen.

Then, I embroidered my design onto a handkerchief. In 1978 for a medieval (SCA) event, I entered it in an embroidery contest & Won!

After the contest, I gave it to my friend, Lady Aehlswyth. We have been friends for 33 years (2009). She lives in Utah & I live in Ohio. We decided long ago we are sisters!

I later made another one, though memory serves not where it went – I just remember embroidering it a second time.

This drawing is what I used to embroider the design. There are many other explanations about this flower & its fruit. If one were to search the Internet, certainly, there is much information available about ‘Passion Flowers.’

Best Always, ~Dierdriana
