Ruthann was born in Massachusetts and grew up with an appreciation of God's magnificent creation whether while picking May flowers in the woods near her home or boating, fishing and water skiing on the bays and rivers in the Kingston-Plymouth area. But after marrying fellow water skier and native Floridian, Bill Hewson, she fast became a thoroughly converted Southerner. Shortly after moving to Stuart, FL in the early 1970's, where Dr. Bill set began practicing OB/GYN, Ruthann took up oil painting. She had little time while raising their 3 daughters Michelle, Sandy, and Kimmy, but the beauty of the area revealed itself to her during the many family outings on the byways and local waterways fishing, water sking, and touring with the children and later with their 6 grandchildren. Once their children were grown, Ruthann got back into painting guided over the years by teachers Sue Parrish, Caroline Haas, Georgia Abood, Christine De La Vega, John Bartok and Kelly Arnold. She found Stuart and its surrounding communities to be perfect subjects for her canvases. Her camera is usually handy to capture a lovely local landmark or beautiful scene from which she composes her paintings. She calls her painting style "realistic impressionism" and applies it to landscapes, nautical scenes, flora and fauna as well as buildings & boats and does commissioned paintings of similar subjects. Ruthann has been active with several art associations including the Art Associates of Martin County, The Jensen Beach Art League and served as president of Palm City Art Associates, Inc. for 6 years. Her paintings may be seen at Waterways Gallery, SE 2881 SE Ocean Blvd, Stuart where she is part owner; at Rare Earth Pottery & Gallery and Thomas Frames & Gallery in downtown Stuart; Fast Frame in Palm City, Marsh Rabbit Gallery and Cottage By The Sea Gallery in Jensen Beach. |
