Phoenix Rising
Michelle Matisse
Title: “Phoenix Rising”
Artist: Michelle Matisse
Size: 48” x 48”, gallery wrapped canvas, sides gold
Media: Original, acrylic, 18k gold leaf, crystals
“Phoenix Rising” was completed on Easter 2008. The phoenix and title of the painting were inspired on the day of completion. I was not aware of the meaning of the title. Master B said it was symbolic of my own resurrection as an artist.
I have since learned that the Phoenix or Bennu bird became popular in early Christian art as a symbol of resurrection, immortality and life after death, in other words all that we celebrate on Easter.
Originally the phoenix was identified by the Egyptians as a stork or heron like bird and was one of the sacred symbols of worship at Heliopolis, closely associated with the rising sun and the Egyptian sun god Ra.
I found further references made to the Phoenix by medieval Jewish commentators, Greek, Roman as well as Chinese mythology.
