Gunny Baum: The Valor of a Brother
Paul Smiley
16 x 20 inches Oil on Canvas
2nd Portrait of subject:
Gunnery Sergeant Ronald E. Baum, USMC
This portrait was developed as a gift for the brother of Gunny Baum, Staff Sergeant Brian Baum, USMC. Ronald and Brian enlisted in the Marine Corps together. SSgt. Baum accompanied the body of his brother home from Iraq.
This portrait is entitled The Valor of a Brother, for both the Baum men, Ronald and Brian, stepped willingly into harms way on the behalf of a grateful nation. In this respect, their Valor is equal.
The two dolphins, one jumping free of the water and one still swimming, show that though Gunny Baum is no longer with his brother, he is not very far away and still swims beside him and leads him towards the 3 birds in the sky. The 3 birds represent Gunny Baum's three children, always near his thoughts.
Baum, 38, was from Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.
Baum died due to hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Died on May 3, 2004.
