Sherman noted as the first "modern general," used fear and terror to bring the support for the confederacy to a halt among southerners by his utter destruction of Atlanta and brutal march to the sea. Sherman led 60,000 men on a 200 mile wide march from Atlanta to Savannah destroying everything in his path. When asked to run for President he replied, "If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve." Also noted for the quote, "War is hell."
