The end of the pendulum is the sun lowering the guillotine lower and lower as time ticks on and on, and indeed time is at the heart of the artist's worst dilemma, because the artist's most viscious struggle and race is the struggle and the race against time.
The unknown artist is imprisioned in his lonely room, unknown to the outside world, but his paintings will either become the doorways to recognition by the outside world, or they may become the artist's guillotine as he continues to slowly die as a poor, unknown artist.
