Alaska was admitted to the Union as the 49th state. Known as "The Last Frontier" it is the largest state in area, covering 570,374 square miles. Purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, at first Alaska was called "Seward's Folly" after the Secretary of State who engineered its acquisition. The "folly" turned into a bargain when gold was discovered in the Klondike in 1896. Site of Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, Alaska is famous for its national parks, abundant wildlife and vast expanse of wilderness.

Personal Bio:
I grew up in the 1950s and early 60s in Houston Texas. Although, at an early age I knew that I would likely pursue a career in art, I studied math and science. I worked after school in neighborhood sign shops, getting a thorough grounding in the craftsmanship of art. From time to time I also did drafting for local civil engineers.
In the late 60s I worked in the typesetting and composing department of a New York publishing house. Letterpress printing calls for a great deal of craftsmanship and it was fun to combine the science of the foundry with love of letters and illustration. After five years there I married and moved back to Texas. My wife, Jennifer, and I settled in Round Rock where we have lived for over thirty years.
We opened a sign shop in Georgetown where we got a great variety of challenging commissions. I hand lettered signs small and large, did silk screen printing and constructed some very interesting displays. An accident in 1977 left me with a permanent injury, making the work I was doing impractical. Entering The University of Texas, I studied fine art and communication arts leading to a career as a graphic designer.
A designer of printed materials works in a modern technology, but its roots are in the art of the ancient scribe. I decided make a personal study of calligraphy. It has been most rewarding. Word of my study spread. Commissions came. I studied more and took classes from some of the nations best calligraphers. I was a founding member of the Capital City Scribes 1983 and it has been an outstanding part of my growth as a calligrapher.
Most of my work today involves calligraphy. I do calligraphic logos, certificates, ketubot, poems, decorative maps and presentation pieces of all kinds.
