Woman On The Trail
Robert McCune (see more by this artist)
April 2010, at a Petroglyph* Site in northeastern Nevada. Dominating the background is the Simpson Park Mountain Range. Some of you might have guessed that the Woman On The Trail is Maggie, whom you have read about in the anecdotal info under several other photos in the gallery. (*Rock engravings, some of which are thought to date back as far as 10,000 b.c.)
Me, (age 78 that year - 2009), after nearly an hour on the trail. Pausing to catch my breath, I looked at the steep formation of rock higher to our right (out of the photo), and complained: “Are we going to climb up to there!”
Maggie (age 67 then), trail map in hand and with matter-of-fact truth, “If you are able to.”
With head up, body straight, and shoulders back, in that reply there wasn't a trace of uncertainty as to her own ability to reach the site. I’d follow that woman anywhere. (Well, almost anywhere).
I was a little short of breath and because that exact moment was unexpected and unplanned, it had to be a fast point-and-shoot. About thirty feet ahead of me, Maggie was unaware I was going to shoot her, else she would have protested and the moment would have been lost. Shot three or four frames. (Before starting up the trail, I reset the ISO speed from 100 for tripod shooting, to 400 for free-hand shooting).
