Campbell lane shops, Singapore
Gordon Tardio (see more by this artist)
Campbell lane shops, Little India, Singapore, (left panel), Jan. 2000 , acrylic colour on handmade thai mulberry paper(kada sa), deckled edge,
8 x 11 in., 20 x 28 cm.
This is part one of a 2 panel set, but it also stands well on its own.
The painting is inspired by typical scenes I have seen in Singapore. when I was living there. That city rebuilds itself so quickly that scens like this quickly vanish , and this market may no longer be there.
Mulberry paper is a traditional paper handmade in Thailand. Mulberry leaves are used there to feed the silkworm in the silk industry, the sticks used to make the paper.
The resulting paper is a thick tissue paper, solid yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect.
The close up picture is of higher resolution to be able to get a feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting.
I can be contactedfor commission work of this type.
