Atocha 8 Reale Silver Medallion

This pure silver 8 Reale with it's exceptional mounting is from the "Nuestra Senora de Atocha", the Spanish galleon which sank in 1622. The date,1622, and "Nuestra Senora de Atocha" is stamped on the front or obverse side of the medallion along with a picture of the Spanish galleon. A 1/4" raw emerald is mounted just below the date imprint. This jewelry piece is 1 1/2" diameter with a 1/2" x 7/8" silver bail. The reverse side of the medallion is the reverse side of a grade 1,(meaning the coin represents the highest degree of preservation)silver 8 Reale. The crest of Spain is displayed brilliantly with the Lion of the Province of Leon and the Castle representing Castille. They were the two powerful regions that united to form the kingdom of Spain. The historical medallion weighs 38 grams and is made from 999.99 fine silver from the Atocha.
