Up for your consideration is this 92-year- old gold leaf-edged autograph book of Irene Liebeskind from 1917 where she writes, "Go little book, go far and near, To all my friends I love so dear. Do get them each to write a page, that i may read in my old age." Things weren't looking too good right about then, so far in the year, WW I was rumbling through Europe, German saboteurs set off explosions in what is now Lyndhurst, NJ., and said it's submarines would shoot anything that floats in their way, so of course the US broke off diplomatic relations, and in April declared war on Germany. Then Germany told Mexico they would give the Southwest back to Mexico if they declared war on the US. Then the US started drafting guys on June 5 while London get sit's first major bombing. It's a wonder these kids could even write without crying all over the place. Apparently, this is from the Brooklyn area because one entry mentions, "...may your future be as bright as Luna Park at night." Luna Park was one of the attractions at Coney Island that was all lights when electricity was still kind of a novelty.
If this was from P.S. 52 either in Brooklyn , Jamaica, or Staten Island and if they haven't changed the numbers, it might be Sheepshead Bay School in Brooklyn, or the one on 146th Road in Jamaica, or or the John C. Thompson School on Staten Island. That's as far as I got. Names noted in this book include: Her mother Fanny, her Dad, Adolf, her brother Joe and the following: Mrs. Cunningham, her teacher, Fannie Wenitsky, Mary Adler, Sadie Anger, Fannie Ament, Josephine Applebaum, Bessie Baine, Lillian Blutter, Yeta Blau, Mary Billquin, Margrett Carr, Edna R. Cohen, Dorothy M. Cohen, Sarah Cohen, Sadie Finestone, Miriam Fogelson, Esther Gottleib, Mabel Heiman, Jennie Julius, Elizabeth Klied, Emmy Krackenberg, Esther Krietman, Rose Kratenberg , Bessie Lantzis, Lillian Leszar, Dora Levy, Irene Liebeskind, Sadie Madier, Lilliah Marcus, Aretta G. Pierce, Florence Macmanis, Rose Scher, Anita Schorse, Minnie Salzburg. Yetta Srebnic, Sarah Unowitz, Sadie Wanda. Minnie Weil, Byrtha Wertkheimer. Wanda Fary. Just maybe, you might know or be related to some Krackenbergs or the Applebaums, or someone just interested in this 92 year old treasure.
