Rare Atocha Coin
Linda D. Shelton (see more by this artist)
Although there were nearly a quarter-million coins on the Atocha, 12 identical silver "pieces-of-eight", are the rarest and most important yet found. These were the first issue of the mint at Santa Fe de Bogota, struck during the few months the mint operated in 1621. Historians have long known that the Bogota mint was operational in 1621, but none of the coins minted that year had been seen until these were found on the Atocha site. This coin clearly shows the legend "RN" mint mark indicating it was minted at Bogota in Nuevo Reino de Grenada province; and an "A" signifying the mintmaster of that period, Alonso Truillo de Yebra. This very rare,(one of twelve) coin is exclusively offered here for $2700.00 complete with certificate of authenticity.
