Rushwork
David Shaw-Smith (see more by this artist)
The craft of woven rush-work was revived in Ireland in the 1930’s, and today is a thriving industry. This documentary covers the harvesting of rushes on Lough Ree, and the storing and curing of the sheaves. Mrs. Frances Brennan prepares the rushes and makes a traditional rush basket over a wooden mold that demonstrates the various weaves. Also included is a collection of current and historic rush-work which demonstrates the skills of the weavers as they continue this traditional craft. Made in 1989.
