Dierdriana’s 15th C. ‘Cool Gown’
Maureen W. Clifton (see more by this artist)
Countess Dierdriana’s totally Summer Tournament Worthy & ‘Cool’ 15th Century Gown with the look of a fine medieval tapestry – is cotton & washable, except the beaded belt must be laundered by hand & laid flat to dry. Be sure to see additional views to show beading & details closer. The beads on the under gown’s bodice were stitched by me & I know it is washable, as it has been laundered! The beading on the belt require careful hand-washing, as it was done by someone else & not as sturdy as I do mine. This outfit has served well at outdoor events when it is hot! Cotton breathes better than many fabrics & its layers wick away the ‘dew.’ The fabric is a lovely design, typical of medieval brocade &/or tapestry. Its outer robe is a blend many colors & secures with 1 large, flat hook & loop in front. The belt goes over it & secures in the back with 2 large, flat hooks & loops. Mistress Siranna made this outfit when I was Queen in 1984 from fabrics I had found (remnants of 5 yards of each fabric & 3 yards of tan fabric). Another lady beaded its belt & I finished making the belt using heavy Pelon layers to stiffen it & stitched it mostly by hand. A narrow tan trim goes completely around the entire gown’s edge & its 2 foot train to secure the lining, so there are no inner hem seams that ever show. The trim was all hand-cut bias (by me) from tan cotton fabric & hand finished on the inside with a hidden stitch & Siranna did that well, as nothing has ever pulled loose or caught on anything with the train flowing behind me outside in grasses & weeds at events! The under gown is an off-white fabric with a sheen & is the same pattern as other gowns I had previously made & as the robe, though in this case it goes over the head (no opening front or back). The under gown is fully lined with an underskirt that is not attached at the hemline. It has a narrow trim at the hemline in tan, brown & white design. It has lace at the edge of the sleeves’ cuffs with small golden heraldic buttons on the forearm seams. The photo in which I am sitting is from 1992 & I am demonstrating embroidery on a piece in which I use heavy thread onto tapestry material for cuffs & breastplate that will have beading on them & are for a gown I will someday create (have the fabric – just need to finish the embroidery & beading). See views of it elsewhere in this gallery. This photo was at the Heritage Art Festival in Delta, Colorado. Our small shire had quite a display for that festival. See additional photos herein: me in The Delta County Independent, where the photographer said, “Medieval people did not smile, so do not smile.” I will not make that mistake again! I looked sad, standing by our beautiful feast table we had set-up in the store's front window. It was a joyous day! Yes, we lunch feasted at our most colorful table & gave friendly waves to passers-by, some of whom stopped in to see our Medieval Arts & Science displays! You can see the displays behind me in another view herein, as well as close ups of the details.
