Royal Coronation Invite, 1979

Royal Coronation Invite, 1979
Maureen W. Clifton

(see more by this artist)

We cam tell this parchment paper is old, because of how it scanned. It is old, almost 30 years old! It has been in a file all these years. This Royal Coronation Invitation in the SCA (international medieval group) is for Purgatorio Coronation, AS XIV (August 1979) & was Calligraphed by the then Lady Dierdriana of the Misty Isles, aka: Maureen W. Clifton. While I did Calligraphy at one time fairly well, it is not something I do much anymore. It was never my focus, as that was creating medieval clothing to wear for tournaments or court. And, I used a variety of stitching skills (embroidery, needlepoint, crewel, beading, weaving). The examples of my calligraphy hand are some of the best that I was able to do & are seen within this gallery. It was never my intention to create scrolls & certainly my calligraphy is not the best in the world. I make no claims to that. Clearly illumination was never something I desired to do. When art inspired me, I created it. When I was asked to do calligraphy, I gave it my all! See additional photos herein to see then Crown Prince Radnor & Crown Princess Shannon-Morgan approaching the King & Queen of the West at Court for their Coronation. Their garb is Byzantine & was created & sewn by me, Lady Dierdriana. In the photo, behind the Crown Prince & Princess I believe is me, wearing my Byzantine garb I designed & made. I was a Lady-in-Waiting for Queen Shannon-Morgan. At the end of their Reign, I was awarded a Queen’s Cypher for Personal Service to Her Majesty. The young lad in the foreground in a red tunic with blue tabard is my eldest son, Michael (then almost ten years). His brother, Scott Alan (then age eight years) is not seen in this view, though he was walking beside him. Radnor asked my sons to be ‘Pages’ for Coronation. The two young lads were told to follow the Herald – so they did – really close! They were too cute! Ah, memories!
