Lady Sits Profile with a Rose, 1993

In 1993, I drew this lady sitting in profile with a rose & submitted it for a newsletter cover in the Shire of Dael Beorht (Western Colorado), SCA, then Principality of Artemisia within the Kingdom of Atenveldt (not Artemisia is their own Kingdom). I colored it about 2001, creating a lady in some of my favorite colors, seep blues, purple & lavender. She is more fantasy than actually a medieval style, though fun to draw. To frame her & for the newsletter’s name, ‘Beorht’s Report’ – I used my banner with grapevines that I had used for my booklet, ‘Guidelines on Being an Attendant to Royalty.’ Since the lady is holding flowers, I colored the grape leaves green for Spring! Inside this issue of the newsletter, the chronicler used a whole bunch of my ‘filler art’ & offered a page about me, ‘Beorht Bright Spot.’ I will always remember the gentleman’s kindness to me & good words about me. See the additional views, the cover as it appeared in black & white, the article & my page with both the colored drawing & black & white one on it. I must say that going into a group & being the only SCA Peer & Royal for a time was about as close to being a celebrity I ever felt just about anywhere in this life. It was great fun to do many wonderful events & share what I knew with them. I taught many people, many things during my years in Colorado & I like to think they are richer for having me there in their midst. The shire participated in many community activities & fund raisers. I entered & won many contests & as Countess Dierdriana of the Misty Isles, I was the Shire’s first Arts & Sciences Champion. Alas, the memories of times well spent with good folks!
