Apples and a Pear, Scratchboard Art

Apples and a Pear, Scratchboard Art
Avalon Art Studio

(see more by this artist)

"Apples and a Pear" is a 5" x 7" " painting done by award winning American artist Arlene Wright-Correll on black clayboard with colored India Ink.

This process had previously been difficult to achieve.

The drawing is made and then chalked on the back, a stylus is drawn over the pattern, then a scratch knife is used to take off the pattern. India ink colors are applied and then scratched off and applied again and scratched off until the end piece of work is completed to my satisfaction. It comes to you unmatted and unframed.
Welcome to the meticulous art form of scratchboard.

Scratch board is one of the more rarely used media for fine art work. When working with scratchboard, the board itself is heavily coated with a layer of white china clay and then black india ink is applied where Arlene wants to work. After allowing to dry the image is scratched in.

With some pieces the entire board is covered with a smooth coating of black india ink. Arlene uses a sharp pen -like object to etch thousands and thousands of delicate lines through the ink surface into the clay layer.

Arlene must concentrate on the negative as the lines reveal the light areas. At times she must use a magnifying glass to refine the intricate detail. Out of a mass of black emerges the artwork, literally scratched into existence.

Owning a piece of original art by Arlene Wright-Correll is affordable! And, scratchboard art holds up incredibly well; it will not fade in direct sunlight and can even tolerate moisture. Arlene's smaller scratchboard pieces cost between $40–$60. Her larger pieces run around $400–$500. Ms. Wright-Correll is a certified artist of the South Central KY Arts & Crafts Guild, a Certified EBSQ Artist and a nominated Member of the Museum of Women's Art in Washington DC.

Each piece comes to you numbered and with an EBSQ Certificate of Authenticity.
