This leopard is a female who originally had 3 cubs. One was killed by the lions at about age 6 months or so and another one by an adult male leopard at about 8 months of age. She currently has one male cub left. This photograph was taken at around mid morning when she still had two cubs and when she had hidden the cubs and had climbed a tree to take a rest in the cool breeze higher up above the ground to pass the heat of day in comfort. She doesn't take the cubs hunting with her as they will be a disturbance and are still too young to accompany her. She lay in the tree for the remainder of the afternoon and in the early evening she got down and caught a young bush buck and fetched the two cubs to come and eat with her. She and the one remaining cub are still doing well and are regularly seen together. The remaining cub is a male and is around one year old now.
The little story above is as the photographer Johan van Eerden told it. He kindly let me paint the photograph which I believe was for him quite an effort to obtain. (Thank you Johan! I hope I have done it justice.)
