African woman drawing water
Shine African Art (see more by this artist)
Unframed original artwork painted by a Zambian artist in a Lusaka shanty town.
This image shows a typical African scene - a woman drawing water from a manually-operated pump at a borehole. In rural areas and shanty towns in Africa, there is typically no water or sewerage system. This means that residents must draw water for drinking and for bathing early in the morning. It is usually the women who do this, sometimes assisted by their children and it provides their family with water for the whole day. Often there is only one communal water pump for hundreds of households, and residents have to walk over a mile to reach it.
This item was donated by the local artist (Reverend Banda) and, as per his request, 100% of the money made from this painting will go towards running a local community school for orphans in his shanty town.
