As a young man Lindsay was a stockman, mustering sheep and driving cattle. He married and had three children who all inherited their father's artistic talent. Lindsay is Ada Bird's brother-in-law and Greeny Petyarre's cousin.
Lindsay Bird Mpetyane's Aboriginal name is Artola Art Nanaka Yunga Areteca. He lives together with his wife Mavis Petyarre, also an artist, and his three daughters Rosie, Jessie and Karen Bird in the Utopia area. Lindsay is an important tribal leader in the Utopia District and is the headman at Mulga Bore Outstation. As one of the few male participants, Lindsay was involved in the famous batik project at Utopia, the artworks of which toured Australia and overseas from 1977 to 1987.
Lindsay first painted on canvas in the late 1980’s, demonstrating his talent in Summer Project; the First Works on Canvas.
Lindsay Bird Mpetyane was instrumental in making acrylic paintings more important at Utopia. His artworks are characterised by great precision and fine colour combinations. After Emily Kame Kngwarreye, he was one of the first Aboriginal artists to have solo exhibitions.
Lindsay's paintings are both iconic and linear. He uses traditional symbols with background dotting of ochre yellow, red, black and white, or paints his Spear Straightening paintings with straight lines. He is also known for under painting the canvas usually in grey or ochre making his paintings quite distinct.
Themes
Lindsay Bird, as a senior law man, can depict different themes of men's law in his paintings. One of the main themes in his paintings is the sacred ceremonial sites that are used for Aboriginal men's business. These sites are protected by various spirits or guardians that keep away everything that has no right to be near the site. These special places are known to Lindsay through his Snake Dreaming where two snakes grew up together and travelled the land marking important places such as Elgoanna. Often Lindsay depicts these sites using a circular design surrounded by a series of men's hunting weapons which represent the guardian spirits.
Honey Ant Dreaming, Utnea (Carpet Snake) Dreaming, Elcudjera (Prickle) Dreaming, Ahakeye (Bush Plum) Dreaming, Ntang Artitja (Mulga Seed) Dreaming, Tyankern (Mulga Berry from mistletoe growing on Mulge Tree) Dreaming, Spear Straightening, Arlkeny (men's body paint designs), Dreaming, other Men's Stories/Dreaming
