Brooke Monette (see more by this artist)
This piece is about finding hope in harsh places, reflected in the soft tones, and sweeping colors. There is a hidden graph of a mathematical equation in the piece, which traces paths that all are drawn into a center, and which shoot back out in another direction. This is something of a metaphor for how sometimes following a given trajectory might lead us into chaos for a time, but ultimately, we get spit back out to take another trail. The colors entering and exiting this spot reflect how we change as a result of significant life events, and of course, cacti are survivors of harsh terrain. In essence, the piece is a depiction of one's having a sense of comfort despite the chaos of life.
This cactus lives in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, MI. Every time I visit, the colors have changed; the reds and pinks have deepened, and the greens and yellows of newer growth have shifted to warmer tones. Fascinated by this color transition, I sought to capture it in a single image.
Prints are available, and are numbered out of a limited run of 250. No more will be made.
