This painting is about my relationship between my father and I.

I symbolize my Father by the brick, because he was a tough hard working bricklayer, but also an alcoholic and a vicious wife-beater. I woke up night after night hearing my father come home from the bar drunk, and start beating up my mom. He used to physically abuse my brother also, but for some strange reason, he only mentally abused me, probably because I was much smaller and more fragile, than my brother. I wanted to be a writer, he would say, "Oh! You want to be a no good worthless writer, who don't want to work for a living". Then, at 17, I started drawing, again, "...You want to be a no good worthless artist that don't want to work for a living". Then, at 25 I had a chance and I wanted to become a minister. Again, "...You want to be a no good worthless minister, who don't want to work for a living". Well Ironically enough so many people, who know me well, say that I have become all three of them.

In this painting , I am symbolized as the rose, only because I consciously ran as fast as I could from being anything like my father and I choose to be like my mother, who is the ultimate beautiful rose to me.

The tremendously extreme contrast, between, the hard cold brick and the soft, warm beautiful rose is a surrealistic masterpiece of an idea. but it fully expresses the extreme difference between my fahter and I. The two vital things, which made the difference was my mother and Jesus, helping me to become like my mother, instead of like my father.

Excellent piece. Love the contrast and clear lines and shapes. Often taking life experiences makes the best symbolic art.

You sound a rose who grew out of a pile of manure. Sorry you have so many painful memories of your father. Such "father figures" make it hard for children to understand how much their father in heaven loves them. Fortunately for you God blessed you with gifts; maybe to make sense out of your cross and lighten the load.
