BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY
By
ROBERT MORRIS CRENSHAW (8 1/2 X 11 inches)
Mr. Robert Morris Crenshaw lived and died without his genius talent ever being recognized other than by a handful of photographers in the South.
It was not in his make-up to “blow his own whistle” but rather, he took pride and quiet enjoyment in what he knew was his best effort. Robert M. Crenshaw was a fervent disciple of Ansel Adams; having read studied and committed to memory many of the principles in his writings. This influence is readily observed in the field as well as in the darkroom.
By profession, Mr. Crenshaw was an architectural engineer, which is seen from his many pictures of churches, bridges, construction projects and as always his love of God’s creations in nature. He was known by all to be a very humble man, never impressed with the body of work he created during his 30 years as a photographer. Hazel Crenshaw was a teacher and she and Robert traveled extensively though out the US and Canada, spending much time in the mountains both East and West.
This collection spans the years of approximately 1959-1989, during which time he produced literally thousands of excellent works of art. Statements from fellow photographers, as well as photographic professors describe his work as outstanding. He is known to have displayed his work only on two occasions; at the local library and at the local art guild in Murray, Kentucky, where he and his wife, Hazel retired.
Mr. Robert Crenshaw died on July 11, 1999 at his home in Murray, KY at the age of 88 years old, born Sept 24, 1910, in his beloved Oklahoma Territory. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a founding member of the local camera club. Many younger members of the camera club have commented, that even in his declining years he was a great help and encouragement to the less experienced members of the club.
After the death of Mr. Crenshaw in 1999 and Hazel Crenshaw in 2001, the estate was auctioned. Included in the auction, was his portfolio of printed work, including hundreds of 8x10 and 11x14 format photographs. With and exception of a few 35 mm slides, all of his work was in Black and White.
Mr. Crenshaw’s negative file, his portfolio and the framed work he displayed proudly in his home were purchased and are now offered for sale. I own his entire negative file most of which is 3X5's but a few hundred 5X7 inch. If you are intrested in seeing some of his negatives I can email a copy after I get set up with a scanner. Give me a call at 270-753-0463 if you wish or email me at rldunn1602@newwavecomm.net Most of his printed work has been sold so the ones listed do not represent his best work but they are in the negatives.
