First Florida Keys Dive Trip!

This portrait taken by Harold Quidley, is included as a portrait of Donna during the time period when these other included underwater photos in these new cofee table books were taken.
Donna was contemplating the wonderful dive experience she had just experienced, just after her very first open water dive in the Florida Keys, shortly after first getting certified to dive a few weeks earlier. This was the first week long dive/vacation/underwater photo trip of our ten year dive photo journey. Those were the days! This was and is a lovely natural coral reef called Looe Reef (named after a ship that wrecked near this site)off of Big Pine Key in the Florida Upper Keys, near where the famous seven mile bridge connects Big Pine Key by road with the lower keys. Looe reef is relatively shallow,and was named for a ship wrecked nearby, the H.M.S. Looe. Looe Reef has living elkhorn corals, perhaps the only living elkhorn corals in the continental United States. Snorkeling is great on the shallower side of this reef, and diving is good on the outer part of the reef and also on the shallower side. We once saw a huge moray eel on this reef. On this first dive the experience is incredible says Donna, as I first rolled over the side of the boat into the water, and opened my eyes, the reef below me was simply awe inspiring and close to a religious experience. Many divers describe their first dive in crystal clear reef water like this we have found over the years. Coral reefs should be protected as they take decades to repair any damage done to these delicate ecosystems. Now this area is a marine sanctuary but in this photo that was prior to that action having been taken by the US Government. Thank you to Geoff and LaNora Schnake whose boat this dive was taken on, who were also just getting into the wonderful world of diving.
