Honoring the Animal Spirits
In the Native American tradition, man communicated with the Creator through interaction with nature; the birds, the forest, the animals.... Many chose or were given symbolic "power animals" whose strength or character reflected the human character traits of the individuals claiming the "power" of that specific animal.

About the Artist.
”I go into the mountains, desert or forest to be with the animals and the birds. I might go for hours at a time or spend several days surrounded by spirits that give me the visions for my stone carving creations.”

From his earliest years, Sammy displayed deep interest in wild animals and birds of prey. He studied, sketched, and painted nature’s creatures as he learned to work silver and stone, a practice that he continues to this day.

A Navajo Elder Master Carver, who had worked the material for years, passed all he knew of the craft to Sammy and encouraged him to shape in stone the wildlife he loved. So began the legendary carvings of North American land animals, birds of prey and sea mammals by the gifted artists of Mexican Springs.

Nature’s images have shaped the life of Sammy Smith, the gifted Navajo artisan whose sense of form and color are legendary. Collectors of Native American Stone Fetish Carving art throughout the world revere his work.

MESSAGE to Native American Fetish Carvings collectors from Sammy Smith: "I want to share my art and it’s meaning to the rest of the world. May the spirits bless the holder of the animal carving."
