The Great T-Tunic in the Era of 12th Century Normandy when made properly fit its wearer’s body shape to define the lines of one’s figure, both for a Gentleman & a Lady! This style is not for everyone. In 1979, I wrote my original article on how to make 'A Man’s 12th Century Norman Costume' to obtain the proper drape – the same drape I had seen in medieval paintings. My article was published in An Tir’s ‘Elf Hill Times’ & I especially thank Chime des Cing Tours for making it so. I had to dig into my SCA file cabinet to find my original info for the judges, as I had created & entered at West’s June Crown costume contest in An Tir, 1980. I received honorable mention, as I have created Steingrim’s in maroon, black & golden colors. The man’s style was somewhat different from the lady’s & the man's 'skirts' are considerably fuller. Might I say, the over tunic’s fullness swishes back & forth, flowing gracefully, especially when a gentleman struts! And, it definitely catches the ladies eye! I researched this style, though had learned part of its fabrication from Mistress Kriemhild of Stonecroft (R.I.P.) about the panel inserts to create a flowing tunic & we had articles from unknown authors that gave some insight to how it worked. Since I had taken pattern drafting in college & there were no patterns available for such a costume, not only did I draft a pattern from 2 commercial patterns, explain how to measure ‘a wearer’ for it & how to layout the pattern on the fabric & drew out the pattern & then I drew a drawing of Steingrim wearing it. Well, I do not draw people that well, though can draw clothing! Because of my sewing skills of already some 20 years by then, I knew the easiest & most secure method of inserting the draped pieces into the tunic’s sides to make sure that it stayed put & explained it. And thus, my article turned into am instruction manual & ‘A Man’s 12th Century Norman Costume’ booklet was born! For the last 20 years, my booklet has been available through AMAZON DRYGOODS’ Catalog: ‘The Pattern Catalog’ – see (same title mentioned): www.victoriana.com/amazonOpens in new window. I am unsure how many of this style of costume I have made over the decades. I have made so many costumes, Royal Robes & Cloaks & garb for sets of Royalty for more than 30+ years that I lost track & had stopped counting at 200 costumes! I was pleased to receive an Honorable Mention for the costume that my friend, Duke Steingrim is wearing. When he strutted into Court to show off the costume, my Honorable Mention in the contest, the cheers were all I needed to know I had succeeded in dressing a Knight well! The costume was a huge hit! After my article was published & I gave a class on its construction, many costume in a variety of colors & great trims, began popping up all over the place. Steingrim’s & mine were the first costumes that I hand cut trim for & did not use commercial trim, as I could not find trim in the colors I desired. My idea began to take hold for some other ladies who were brave enough to take the time to do trim in that way. It goes along with cutting one’s own bias bindings & not using commercial. Unfortunately, getting correct colors from old & scanned photos is difficult, so I have added views of the costume’s parts for more accurate colors – as it looks today, 30+ years later. We both still have these high contast colorful outfits.
