Totally Not Medieval - It's Heraldic
Maureen W. Clifton

(see more by this artist)

Ah, you say, what is this? It is totally not medieval! It is modern HERALDRY! Yes, it is an Airplane & United States Air Force Insignias! The information on both pages gives reasons why this is here, though here is the real reason: In the early 1980s, Dierdriana aka: Maureen, had an idea for creating material & stitched, somewhat dimensional items for SCA Heraldic Devices with a helm & weapon blades to support the shield. See ‘Heraldic Shield Design for Embroidery’ as its design was the aftermath idea from having created this project for the 963rd Squadron in the United States Air Force. Unfortunately, Maureen’s health (early 1980s) interfered ever creating her SCA Medieval Arms in the fashion of her Heraldic Shield Design. The USAF project is from whence the idea had come. That project was created this when I was pregnant with my first son, Michael. It was displayed in the 953rd Squadron’s Entry Hall at McClellan Air Force Base, North Highlands, California & finished in late 1969 after working on it for 6 months & more than 600 hours. It is a ‘Chain of Command’ with an EC-121 Super Constellation Plane above the 4 Command insignias. The entire project was created using felt, embroidery & fabric with the 2 large frames made by an Airman & store-bought frames for the 4 individual designs. This project was totally non-medieval, though was none-the-less Heraldic in nature, as the insignias of the divisions are Modern Day Heraldry as recognizable devices for each 'chain' in the 'command.' There are 2 views that follow: Page 2 of the info I wrote about it a while back. I had been to McClellan AFB to the museum & spoke with the curators there. The project’s whereabouts is unknown to them. Please see both views close-up for the details of the project. The 963rd Squadron & 552nd Wing were relocated to Tinker AFB, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I do not remember when that happened, though I know my son, Scott, who is USAF Reserve & his Father, Bill have been there. Unfortunately, the location of this Art is unknown. I would like to see the project surface & be placed in National Museum of the Unites States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio at Wright-Patterson AFB! I have written to the curator of that museum. Seen within this is a large USA 'Federal Eagle' with the Stars & Stripes within a Shield (more Heraldry). The American Eagle holds an Olive Branch in one talon with Arrows in its other talon. This was stitched in Crewel Embroidery from a kit with wool yarns for Col. George Anderson, Commander of the 963rd Squadron in about 1970. Its finished size: 14” W x 16” H. See the black & white photo from the embroidery sheet for detail. The photo of me & Col. Anderson is the only photo I have of the 'Federal Eagle' & it is fuzzy (in 2009 it is a 39 year old photo). I wished I had a close-up & good photo of that art piece, because it was complex & quite detailed.
