PAINTING ABOVE - Self-Portrait with Friends - Won't You Join Us?
Audrey Cooper
1927 - TBA when completed
I began painting in 2005 when I was 78, and acrylic paints were my medium of choice. You may have already guessed that I am self-taught (naive or primitive sounds a little pretentious to me). My work has been described as "Grandma Moses on meds", which I find quite flattering.
I have shown and sold work in London, Ontario and have decided to try my hand at YESSY. My paintings all tell stories, and I'll be happy to write one up for you whenever you buy one.
At the present time I am working on a series of paintings, GROWING UP IN TORONTO IN THE 30'S. I don't think there are too many people left who can share those memories with me, so I thought I'd put it on canvas. The 1930's were not the best of times, but then again, what is? But they were magic to us as children. Everyone I knew was poor, so no one was poor.
It was a time when if your mother had enough money to buy you new clothes and shoes, they were always two sizes too big when you bought them, and two sizes too small when you quit wearing them. It meant that for maybe a month in that time period, you actually had clothes that fit you. But we had one thing that was poor magic - Freedom!
I'm not going to go on and on. At present, I have eight paintings in the collection (I mistakenly sold four others and I miss them a lot). I have many more to add, and hopefully will end up with perhaps 30 paintings when I'm done.
What I would like from you, if possible, is that you send me a critique or criticism ( or even better, praise) of these efforts. I'd be very interested to hear from you with your comments or requests
You can reply through YESSY, or to me email, audcooper@mac.com.
Thanks
