Artist Statement:
Creating art is what I love and what I must do. My purpose is to honour my Creator in producing excellent artwork that is contemplative and intelligent. I desire that my work exemplifies the amazement I feel about the ability to create. My hope is to challenge, encourage, and help instill a sense of renewal in the viewer.
The aim for excellence begins with careful planning of each of my narrative compositions. Contemplating the philosophy and feelings I want to evoke, I consider the questions that need to be asked. Which ones do I answer and which do I leave with the viewer to ponder? Although tangents are intuitively explored along the way, the collection of written philosophy, plans, and preliminary drawings comprise a blueprint for each piece. Each day’s work is a journey of faith to the original concept because of the conscientious application of many layers of paint. I love experiencing the fascination of seeing all my ideas and their tangents become reality on canvas fulfilling, or even exceeding, my primary vision.
I endeavor that my high contrast, high colour landscapes show Aotearoa New Zealand as the fresh, sparkling and awe-inspiring land she is.
"Ephemeral Perception", the series of paintings currently in-studio, is to be comprised of at least 10 works. New Zealand elements are integrated from my perspective as a relative newcomer to Aotearoa. The paintings are inspired by Christian philosophy and Hubble deep-space images which stir a sense of the bewildering vastness of the Universe. This vastness compels me to ask, what am I that You are so mindful of me? What am I striving towards? Am I making my life count? Am I spending my time wisely?
My hope is Ephemeral Perception compels the viewers to consider their brief journey here on Earth, and what they pursue along the way. Fashion? Beauty? Wealth? Fame? The best house on the best street? The fastest car? The perfect career? The list is endless and, ultimately, choices are made by each person. This series challenges me to take a concept that exists only in my heart, mind and, spirit and meaningfully transform it into an image that I hope is provocative, yet beautiful. Each image is painted onto a purpose built frame support (approx. 800 x 1000mm) I've specifically designed for this series.

Biography
Beverly Claridge has a distinctive style in her oil on board paintings. Her specialty is creating figurative compositions using a strong colour palette.
Beverly has been creating art for over 20 years, becoming a fulltime artist when she moved to New Zealand in 2001. In 2004, Beverly changed her principal medium from coloured pencils to water-miscible oils. She considers her main influences to be the Pre-Raphaelites, Edgar Degas, Salvador Dali and pre-eminent American figure painter, Nelson Shanks.
Prior to immigrating to New Zealand, she founded and directed the Fine Arts Ministry at Central Community Church, a 3, 000-member congregation in Wichita, Kansas. They hosted two well-received exhibitions in 2000 and 2001.
Beverly's artwork is in private collections in the United States and New Zealand. Earlier artworks are signed as Beverly Unverferth and Beverly Cox.
