Biography
brenda norrieArtist Statement: Brenda Norrie
I was born in the 60’s on a farm in Southern MB, Canada. These formative years were spent exploring the woods near my home and communing with nature. My mother, a talented artist, taught me at young age to love and appreciate Art. Although I have been painting and drawing as far back as I can remember, I did also attend two universities (University of Manitoba and University of British Columbia) in an attempt to hone my abilities. Quite simply, I create because I need to. When I am creating, I am happiest. It helps me reconnect with my inner self. It is something that comes from within and usually reflects something going on in my life.

I have traveled extensively and lived in different parts of the world. These experiences have given me a glimpse at the universality of all people. In essence we are all the same. My themes generally reflect this. Everyone can identify with experiencing or wanting to experience joy, bliss, harmony etc.

I have worked with many media: drawing painting, ceramics and photography. My most current passion is acrylic paint. Although my styles and themes have changed over the decades, they continue to reflect me. As I change, my work changes. This collection reflects the inner peace I am currently experiencing. By looking inside myself to create my own happiness, I have reached new levels of understanding, tolerance and acceptance. I am now able to reflect this onto canvas and I am creating the best work of my life.

I begin a piece by thinking about the emotive qualities of colour. Warm rich oranges and browns reflect harmony whereas cool light and airy greens can reflect serenity or tranquility etc. I add texture because emotions are richly layered so my canvases need that textural quality. Generally, I know a piece is done when I can look at the piece and feel the emotion I have attempted to depict. And I hope that when people see my work they also can experience some of those same feelings.
