"ReconSTRUCKtion"

"ReconSTRUCKtion"

Image EO-1.08

What attracted me to photograph this picture was its general shape. It is like a flower coming into bloom, each petal unfolding from a central point; the sky, the overpass, the street below and the sunstruck area of rebuilding at the edge of the water.

Three and an one eighth portions of the picture you see needed special and individual attention. Contrast was the challenge of this piece. Bright early morning sun, along with very dark and intermediate areas. The shadows under the overpass had to be worked on to reveal the secretive beams supporting the elevated roadway. The very bright areas in the construction area needed to have contrast and color correction to bring up its detail, and then there was a distracting dark streak across the sunlit portion of the road that had to be removed, later realizing it was a shadow of a lamppost from the roadway above. The sky was torturously balanced so that the lower clouds could be seen and not be swallowed up by the strength of the morning sun.

And then there was this car coming off the exit ramp with its headlights on just as I was capturing this picture, like “cat eyes in darkness.”

I think that makes the whole picture “happen,” for that vehicle becomes, as it were, a mysterious messenger foretelling the finished piece. Car, painted black with beams of light, high contrast - thereby becoming representative of the whole piece.

The title under the picture is done in two font sizes; the larger representing the current reconstruction that is scheduled to take place in Manhattanville soon. The lesser font is present to tell us of the reconstructions of yesteryear, which made Manhattanville the community that it is today.
