Photo artist Leonard J. Horsford (known to most by his middle name Jerry) had a fascination with photographic imagery dating back to his high school days in his native island Grenada (located in the Caribbean).
Over the years he has compiled an inventory of images including, natural and man made subjects. In recent years, his main focus has been on macro photography, through which he endeavors capture and share the essence of his subjects.
The name Essential Imagery comes from that orientation and constitutes the basis for his approach. This recent quote about his work opens up a window into his thought process and mindset.
“The focus of my art is to find beauty and meaning in everyday subjects that may be considered ordinary and or insignificant. These subjects may range from the tiny clover’s bloom to imposing man-made structures, or even the elegance of a simple stream. Using these diverse subjects, to present a perspective that speaks of beauty and meaning is thread that connects them all.”
Leonard selects most his subjects based on feeling an emotional connection to them. He would frequently say that they “speak to me.” He then goes about trying to capture on film what he feels from his subjects. Sometimes this process works beautifully and he walks away satisfied that he has done “justice” to his subject. However, in many instances he may walk away from a subject feeling that he just could not find the right perspective to convey what his subject was “saying.”
Typically, Leonard’s work is custom printed traditional photography media, but with advances in digital imaging software, his fine art prints are also produced on canvas or watercolor media through a process called Giclee.
He presently resides in Chesterfield, MO, where his work can be seen on display in some local St. Louis galleries as well as various other venues around town.
