Chua Boon KeeChua Boon Kee

the Sculptor was born in Singapore in the year 1953 from parents originated from Chaoyang county of Shantou in the Guangdong province of China.

Chua received formal art education in Baharuddin Vocational Institute majoring in Applied Sculpture under prominent sculptor Tan Teng Kee who is specialized in metal sculptures and he graduated from BVI in 1973.

Soon after that he started working in the ship building industry. There he learnt new knowledge and accumulated experiences about the welding, as well as the mechanisms and structuring of metallic material.

While working in the ship building industry, he made every possible effort experimenting to create sculptures out of the waste metal materials.

Simultaneously, he continue to study and made research about art related topics and the calligraphy works of some accredited calligraphers in different dynasties of China, particularly the Cao Shu (Cursive Script) of Wang Xizhi, Wang Duo, Huai Su and Zhang Xi. His calligraphy sculptures are distinctive in Singapore’s sculpture history; he combined the essential spirits of the Chinese calligraphy with the modern sculpture language and brought together with the unique sculptural forms and sculpture language into the world of sculpture.

With his strong engineering experience, Chua has had assisted some prominent sculptors in completing their large-scale sculpture works as well as their smaller versions.

In 1996, Chua became a full-time sculptor. He started to exhibit his sculpture works regularly since the year 2000. He has since participated in more than 20 group exhibitions including some recent ones like the “Singapore-Korea Exchange Art Exhibition 2004”, “ Singapore Art Show 2005”, “Milestone Project 2006” and “Asia Pacific Painters & Calligraphers Art Exchange Exhibition 2006”. Chua Boon Kee held his first solo exhibition in 2004 entitled “To Catch the Wind”, based on his calligraphy sculptures at the Utterly Art Exhibition Space in Singapore.

Chua Boon Kee has won the following awards during his artistic venture: -

Federation of Art Societies (Singapore)
