DEB BELIEVES that just as paintings of pretty flowers, unicorns and lighthouses make us smile or feel content, emotionally charged intense works that cause discomfort or inspire people to challenge themselves, forces us to recognize art is more interesting when it provokes, annoys or entertains rather than when it just looks beautiful.
HER WORK ASSIMILATES her opinions, judgments, beliefs and emotions; found objects; text; iron; bronze; copper; patina; rusting; construction; sanding; assemblage; staining; scratching with her fingernails; layers upon layers of acrylics; carving with screwdrivers and woodworkers’ tools; and applying a riot of color with an athletic force in order to obtain a crude urban texture.
DEB IS an Artist from Los Angeles currently residing in Greenville, SC, where she is active in the upstate art scene. Currently an art instructor at theARTSCenter (http://www.explorearts.org/programs.htm ) in Clemson, SC she teaches classes to children, teens and adults. Deb is the Artist-in-Residence at Upstate Visual Arts (http://www.upstatevisualarts.org/ ) where she spearheaded the UVA Professional Artist Association, was chair of Art in the Park 2008 Demonstration Area, has a studio and exhibits her works.
Formerly educated and employed as a graphic designer she has had the opportunity to work with many wonderful clients including Public Television, and the Human Rights Campaign. She became frustrated creating throw-away-art in the form of public service announcements and designing for the client, who has all the say. Eschewing art schools with their labyrinthine structures and syllabi based on obtaining academic units and defying the class distinctions pervading the art world-Deb made her transition from graphic designer to Artist with aplomb. Now she is creating art for art’s sake, expressing her voice, her view, her way. Her work has been purchased by individuals throughout the United States and Europe.
“My role as a contemporary artist is to define the openness to consider anything; to listen and ignore everything; to know that there are no firm rules and if I find any to break them; to create a little spark hoping people will fuel it, moving it further along.”

___COMMISSION WORK___
I gladly offer commission work for supporters such as you, though it must be understood that each painting evolves through intuitive responses and decisions. That means I can work with a broad idea and range of colors, but I need latitude to explore my ideas within those parameters. For instance, if you want me to create a piece similar to CHANGE, using a word, phrase, trademark, tagline or quote submitted by you to construct an original piece of art I will be happy to do a rendition for you. Specific size requirements are easy to accommodate. Price and S&H would vary for different sizes.
To request commission works please click on contact and type COMMISSION WORK in the subject line.
