Biography
Ed McDermed was born and grew up in Indianapolis where he studied for his BFA at the John Herron School of Fine Art, which was then affiliated with Butler University.

He has since worked in a variety of media, producing sculpture, paintings, stained glass panels, silk-screen prints and woodworking items. His sculpture has ranged from figurines to larger than life statues, including garden statuary and fountains, and has been sold to collectors in all fifty states. His most recent work includes hardwood bowls and beautiful pepper mills in addition to acrylic paintings on canvas.

His twenty-year career as a floral designer has proven helpful in producing his latest paintings of flower arrangements. He now lives and works in Fishers, Indiana.

ABOUT SCREEN PRINTING.........

A screen print is made by forcing colored ink through a stencil and onto paper or other materials. Presently most screen prints are made on huge mechanical presses which can turn out thousands of copies . After finishing the original artwork the artist has little or nothing to do with the printing.

Our prints are made by hand, by the artist, who performs every task from making each screen to the final signing of each piece of art.

The screen is nylon fabric, woven so fine it may have over three hundred threads per inch, stretched over a wooden frame. A black liquid called tusche is then painted on the screen exactly where the artist wants the ink to appear on the print. A blocking agent is then painted over the entire surface and the tusche is washed out, leaving an opening in the block-out forming the stencil.

A sheet of fine paper is registered under the screen and ink is pressed through the screen with a squeegee, printing the shape the artist designed. This process is repeated until all the papers have this first color printed on them. Then a solvent is used to wash the screen clean of all of the block-out, and on this clear screen the artist paints the tusche for the next color to be printed on the run of papers. In order to get the varied color effect on our prints, this process is repeated over forty times on most of the designs.

Because the stencil is “destroyed” after each color is run, in order to make a stencil for the next color, the number of prints is limited to the number of sheets printed with the first color. This insures that our prints are truly “limited editions”. Most prints are editions of fifty or less and each one is numbered and signed by hand by the artist.

ABOUT GEODELICS........

The term geodelic is a combination of “geo”, referring to earth, and “delic” which stems from ancient words meaning manifest, or formed by hand.
My geodelics are sculptures formed from glazed ceramic clay and fire-polished colored glass crystals that are inspired by naturally occurring formations such as geodes. By using unusual glazes and glass colors that are not found in nature, I am able to offer works of art that can’t be found anywhere else.

Geodelic sculptures can be used outdoors in a landscape setting or as beautiful decorative accessories to complement your indoor décor.
