“From mind to canvas, a true artist paints what he envisions and not what is directly in front of him.”
I love large works on canvas. The freedom is exhilarating! I've studied the great ones, the masters. After years of studying techniques and styles I've created my own. I dabble, experiment, stand back to analyze and before I know it, I'm standing in front of a new creation. My mind, heart and soul are now on canvas.
It just became and now it is. “Just Being” My abstract series came about in a totally spontaneous moment, which is why I love it so much. It is moody, rich, and full of life. This is how most of my abstracts come into being – spontaneously. After an early morning walk in the sun I return with the sun’s warm rays still warm upon my flesh and I spring into action to capture it on a new canvas.
My grandfather was an accomplished artist. As a child I used to lose myself in his large paintings of Scotland, fascinated with paddle-wheelers, fishermen, the beautiful Scottish hillsides, plus a scary picture of Gloucester Castle. I was blessed to inherit that wonderful painting of the Scottish Highlands.
I love to study the great masters. I’ve been painting for 55 years. I’m a self-taught artist. I read and read, then experiment and then I read and read some more. I paint the light side and the dark. I love the challenge of chess and have done a Surrealistic series on large canvas in dramatic black, grey and white, minimalist style. Some of these works are in the largest private collections in Canada. One is my cat called “Here Comes Trouble” owned by Lou McEachren, Chairman of the Board for Hydrocarbons in Calgary. He is a large art and antique collector.. I also write, do communications design in graphics and multimedia. I play into the wee hours on guitar and harmonica. Art surrounds me.
My works are in collections in US, England, Japan, Barbados, China, Korea, The Virgin Islands, Germany and across Canada.
