Now an active artist in the small Texas town where he was once a beloved family physician, Gary Bachers’ art transcends the visual. Bachers chose to work with colored pencils after a 1987 stroke stole the use of his right hand, and his ability to produce language. Communication became difficult for Bachers, until he discovered a new language of visual art. Over the years Bachers has made the medium of colored pencils his own, progressing from his first rough compositions to an innovative layering of delicate pencil lines.
Bachers’ works have been called “silent conversations”. He frames the conversations for us, only asking us to open our eyes and listen. The full moon is one of Bachers’ recurring motifs, calling to mind the cosmos and man’s eternal wonder at the universe. The moon is a symbol of ubiquity, rising and setting over all the earth, and it represents reflection, its light emanating from the hidden rays of the sun. Bachers’ works have been featured in colored pencil anthologies and numerous prestigious juried exhibits throughout the United States
