Mandalascape - '08 (Oil on Canvas / 31"x48") by Glenn A. Bautista
(An unframed, rolled oil on canvas abstract expression of mandalas found in nature)
This insightful preoccupation with the concentric rings of a tree started when, once, walking across a park to my school, I decided to miss out on my art class (at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA) just to make a drawing of a half-cut tree which strange beauty and mystery couldn't escape me. I had also drawn numerous concentric rings of a tree earlier, but more as a fascination for its design, per se.
By now, these concentric tree rings have become an icon in my visual tools for art and spiritual expression simply because they reflect God’s own artistry found in nature. This mysterious symbol not only manifested at the cross-section of trees but also in many of God’s creation in nature, such as flowers, plants, and many other organic designs we can find in nature if only we find the time to search for them.
Having concocted my own close up lens, I have to a certain extent collected a few “found nature objects” that have become my sources of inspiration and visual references when I start to sketch, paint or film. Truly, these are God’s art expressions for the designs I perceive in his creations infinitely symbolize his great mind, brilliance and creative genius:

There was a time, when I was much younger, I tried writing this short line: “In is out, out is in”, that seemingly or exactly describes what I perceive in God’s creations in nature. What I see in nature when I photograph, for example, a small detail of a bud or a flower is exactly what I see when I look up to view God’s creations up there in the skies - - much more when I had the chance to view some planets and stars at the Griffith Observatory in California. Because of this, there is no reason why I should get bored for nature is always there for me to perceive, understand, translate and depart from for any artistic expression. Life really is too short, I’ve realized now that I am 62 years old, to interact with God’s creations found all around us.
