The Sign Painter, 2005
Samuel E. Haug
Pencil Drawing
My Grandfather, Elmer Frank Haug.
He taught me how to paint signs when I was only 10.
He lived in a small town in Wisconsin called Cuba City. It is between Dubuque, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin. I was the only person in my family to be born in the same city, one day after his birthday.
This portrait captures his quiet personality and peaceful nature.
His hands would shake uncontrollably in his later days. When he put the paint brush to board it would stop and he could paint letters so smooth and perfect it was amazing.
I inherited some of his artistic talent as well as his name which is what the E stands for in my signature.
