Artist Biography
Hilda was raised in California. Her art career began after retiring as a high school secretary. She was introduced to eastern style painting seven years ago and this continues to be her passion. Her Asian inspired paintings are on a variety of rice papers. Some have visible fiber textures, gold speckles or silver treads woven into the paper. A few paintings are on Chinese silk fabric. They are painted with Chinese ink and watercolor. Some have a suminagashi design. Suminagashi is a Japanese technique once held as a secret. The technique of floating inks and colors on water and transferring them to paper produce a unique marbling effect. Hilda uses calligraphy and seal chop. Hilda paints colorful watercolor and mixed media collage paintings as well.
Nature is especially dear to her heart and is her inspiration. Her admiration for, animals, insects, and flowers is evident. She looks for beauty in all her subject matter that ultimately will translate into an original cherished piece of artwork.
Hilda shares her art at charitable events donating original paintings to their causes. She competes in national juried and local exhibitions and has won awards. This year she donated a suminagashi koi painting to the San Joaquin River Parkway & Conservations Trust Art Auction event held in March 2009.
This October she will participate in the Annual Open Studio Art Tour for the Central Coast North County sponsored by ARTS Obispo.
Last summer Hilda taught children art classes in watercolor and Chinese brush painting at the Hanford Kings Art Center and Arts Visalia Gallery. Paintings of her student’s hang at the Hanford Community Hospital. An accomplishment she is proud of knowing that she touched children’s lives with art. The children taught her that there is more to life than winning awards; it’s about making a difference in someone’s life.
“Art is like a sport! You have to keep practicing to get better. I never get bored. My goals are to complete beautiful paintings. I get in the zone when I paint in my studio. Listening to music brings out my energy to work and paint for hours. There are moments which are very spiritual when a painting I am working on tells me it’s time to stop painting, and I do. Each human being has a passion within their soul, mine happens to be art.” Artist – Hilda Vandergriff |
