This is my first painting in acrylic and the first painting on canvas. It is 3.5 ft tall x 4.5ft wide.
Inspired by Matthew 5:7 "Blessed are the merciful for they shall be shown mercy". This word, merciful, is a very powerful word. It is an action word not just a feeling of compassion.

At first, I had no intension of using a Bible story. My idea was to paint something that could hang in anyones house. As I researched for a way to illustrate this verse I found many paintings of The Good Samaritan. To me, they didn't fit the power of the word, merciful. It wasn't long before I came across a story of a modern day stoning of a young girl who was in love with the wrong boy. The photos were 'stills' from a video camera that showed various fallen and dying positions of this girl with only the feet of her accusers visible. It was so disturbing to see the cruelty. My mind immediately went to the Bible story in John 8. This is about the woman who was caught in the act of adultery and was brought to Jesus by the Pharisees and teachers of the Law. The Law of Moses commanded that she be stoned. This was intended to trap Jesus, but Jesus turned it into an example of mercy.

This painting is a 'still' of the moment after Jesus said, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her”. Where Jesus stooped down the second time to write on the ground and when the people that heard Him began to go away one at a time, the older ones first.

It is my belief that Jesus exposed the sins of the people in His writing on the ground.

She covers herself with shame, unaware of the forgiveness that will be given to her.

Jesus was the only one left to condemn the woman and the only one without sin. He chose mercy.
