The Face Jug Chess Set is a personal favorite. The chessboard is made from solid Walnut and Maple measuring about 30" square by 2" tall.
The playing pieces are also hand-carved from Walnut and Maple and feature SHotgun carrying kings at about 9" tall, his wife (holding an ear of corn and a stack of cash), stills for bishops, hound dogs for knights, and outhouses for rooks.
The pawns are the paper/clay creations of Virginia artist Joey Arrowood and measure about 2.5" tall and feature 16 different Face Jugs.
Several different reasons have been offered as to why Face Jugs were used by the Moonshiners. One being that the scary faces would keep children from getting into the contents of the jugs, and others believe it was because the 'shiners' paid the jug makers in product rather then cash and the jugs were the result of their pottery work while under the influence.
A chess set rich in North Carolina heritage thats a whole lot of fun to play with.
