Siempre Sola (Always Alone)
Marisela Oropeza
One of the beauties in art is to provide ones own interpretation, but the artist has decided to give her intake on this one because it pertains to a childhood inspiration. When Marisela lived in Mexico at the age of eight, she walked to El Colegio de las Madres every morning, and on her way, she passed through a Convento where nuns offered their service to God. She would imagine how life would be like as a nun behind those tall walls that separated the convent from society, and in this piece, she decided to portray the life of a nun in three different aging stages (from youth to old age) with a basket of fruit (life) as a gift to the Lord. The broken and remote windows incorporated to the background pertain to a life of isolation from a fallible society, which can likewise pertain to an individual’s attempt to achieve internal bliss and spirituality.
