About the Artist.
Sammy Smith - NAVAJO MASTER CARVER
A member of the Navajo Tribe from Gallup, New Mexico. Sammy has been a part of M & M Trading since 1970.
From his earliest years, Sammy displayed deep interest in wild animals and birds of prey. He studied, sketched, and painted nature’s creatures as he learned to work silver and stone, a practice that he continues to this day.
A friend of Sammy’s grandfather, a Zuni Master Carver noticed his talent, took him under his wing, and thought Sammy the Zuni traditional way to carve stone and wood. It was then that many stone fetish-carving collectors recognized Sammy Smith as a prominent stone carver.
Nature’s images have shaped the life of Sammy Smith, the gifted Navajo artisan whose sense of form and color are legendary. Collectors of Native American Stone Fetish Carving art throughout the world revere his work.
MESSAGE to Native American Fetish Carvings collectors from Sammy Smith: "I want to share my art and it’s meaning to the rest of the world. May the spirits bless the holder of the animal carving."
