 The business “Nature’s Gifts By Doni” was established in September of 2005 by Doni O’Rourke.
I lived in Charleston South Carolina in 1990 and after several years of traveling in the Southern United States I found there was a rich history of basket making. Since this initial exposure it was clear that basketry is not always for the individual who prides themselves in creating a work of art in one afternoon. In appreciation of basketry I enrolled in a local class to learn about coiling and other techniques. The attention to detail and intricate designs are a worthwhile challenge. However, the appreciation of a finished one-of-a kind pine needle piece outweighs the time and labor involved in creating it. It will delight me knowing that others may enjoy my unique creations for many years.
Basketry:
Basket making is found all over the world and is unique depending on the resources available and the person who created it. Examples of materials are pine needles and grasses to name two.
Sweet grass is the primary material used in constructing African coiled basketry in the Southeastern United States. This type of basketry originally was used for agricultural and household work on plantations.
In Colorado the Ponderosa Pine grows with pine needles reaching a top length of 8 to 10 inches. My pine needle creations originate from these Ponderosa Pine needles after they have naturally dried and fallen from the tree. These pine needles are then cleaned and clipped for coiling. Coiling is accomplished by incorporating raffia. Raffia is a natural material found in the country Madagascar (4th largest island near South Africa). I use mostly natural materials in my designs when available. Some pine needle pieces have hand painted wood, leather, stone or speciality beads used as embellishments. The pine needle piece is then carefully treated with shellac to protect it's natural materials.
